P&E HOUSE, WANSTEAD

This Shou Sugi Ban clad house is a result of a significant enlargement and a complete renovation to create a forever family home.

The rear extension effectively doubles the footprint of the house, offering a new kitchen, dining area, multiple living spaces, a toilet and a utility room, while still allowing for a generous garden to be retained. The footprint of the extension is staggered to reduce its bulk and to ensure there is no negative impact on the neighbouring properties. Additionally, large opening-corner sliding doors were incorporated. Thanks to clever engineering, there are no obstructions from structural supports, creating an unobstructed passage and allowing for an unobstructed view of the garden.

Inside the extension, a vaulted ceiling with skylights and clerestory windows brings natural light into the deep space. The upper floors were fully refurbished, and the loft has been extended through a hip-to-gable alteration and the addition of a rear dormer.

The ground floor and loft extensions are finished in charred timber cladding, providing a striking contrast to the white render of the existing building. The finish I slow maintenance and feels tactile and warm, with vertical slim planks adding texture to the facade.

The project appeared in the RIBA Residential Directory 25/26 (page 122).
